Big idea: Negative numbers help us to model many real world situations.
Essential Question #2: How can I add integers?
MR 2
In this investigation, you explored two ways to model the addition of integers on a number line and with a chipboard. These questions will help you summarize what you have learned:
1. When you add two integers, how can you decide whether their sum will be positive, negative, or zero.
Answer: when both numbers are positive the answer will be positive. When both numbers are negative the answer is a negative. When both numbers are opposite the answer will be zero. When it is mixed with both negative and positive, it depends on the largest number.
2. Describe how to add any two integers.
Answer: To add any two integers you follow the order of operations.
3. Explain how you can find the opposite of a number. Use the following examples to illustrate your explanation.
A. 7
B. 0
C. -12
Answer:
A. -7
B. 0
C. +12
Think about your answers to these questions, discuss you ideas with other students and your teacher, and then write a summary of your findings.
I learned that I can use a chip board for adding integers. Using a number line to find the numbers by adding them in different orders to get the different answers. Even when they are switched around they will be the same answer.
